Not Seeing Any Results? Here’s Why Gym Time Isn’t Working For You


Trust me, I understand how incredibly disheartening it can be to not be seeing any results when you go to the gym.


When I was in college (getting my degree in exercise science, none the less) I gained a TON of weight.

And it wasn’t the good kind.

I couldn’t understand why I was gaining so much weight so fast… maybe it was the beer, maybe it was the crazy hours in labs, maybe it was the lack of sleep, maybe it was the lack of cardio. Or maybe it was all of the above.

(it was definitely ALL OF THE ABOVE)

I talk to people EVERY SINGLE DAY about WHY they aren’t losing weight. And I even talk to men and women who exercise ALL THE TIME and they still aren’t losing weight.

And the answer IS ALWAYS something is out of balance.

Whether it’s the amount of cardio you’re doing, the exercises you’re choosing, your daily nutritional choices or just whether or not you get enough sleep. Any of these things can simply stop you from being a fat burning machine to a fat building machine.

So with balance in mind now let’s talk about the top FOUR reasons why you’re most likely NOT losing weight right now.


Cardio is taking up TOO MUCH priority time

Damn cardio.

I swear, there is nothing that hurts my heart more than to hear people say “but I run ALL THE TIME, and I still don’t lose weight.”

It’s because you have chosen ONE exercise and you are beating it to death. Our bodies adapt to constant states of change. Can you eventually lose TONS of weight doing cardio?

Of course, but it will take a very long time.

This entire article is about balance and that means that running, elliptical, and biking cannot be your sole means of getting into shape.

Don’t completely slash cardio either. Pick a happy medium spend 2-3 days per week doing steady state cardio then the other 3-4 days in a strength or high intensity program.

Brutal Honesty Here: Cardio is simply not the best way to get into excellent shape fast. But it is a necessary component to help build strong lungs and a strong heart.

And I get it EVERYONE knows the cardio equipment NOT EVERYONE knows how to use a squat rack.

Your Eating HABITS Are Outta Wack

I have people tell me ALL the time how healthy they eat and that they just don’t understand why they don’t lose any weight or see any results.

And this is a simple answer.

Apples are “healthy” BUT if you eat an apple for breakfast, raspberries for your snacks and a banana for lunch and it was all mixed with Greek yogurt then you have just shot your carb count, for the day, through the roof.

Even fruits can sneak unwanted fat onto our bodies. Guess what?

Yup it’s all about balance.

When it comes down to it if you truly want to see results you need to do a walkthrough of your day and make sure you’re not over doing it on any ONE macronutrient (Proteins, Fats, Carbs).

The best possible way to do this is to spend ONE week tracking ALL of your meals and snacks and see what the breakdown for each day looks like. Use a tracking app like MyFitnessPal or a log book.

This is almost always the first thing I have to change with ANY new client of mine. Because healthy doesn’t always mean it’s good for you.

So, if you truly want to see awesome results then figure out what your day is looking like and make adjustments accordingly. Here are a few articles on nutrition if you need some extra help.


You’re Not Doing High Intensity Exercises

If you want FAST results, and I mean FAST, then you need to add high intensity training to your routine.

Nothing burns through stubborn fat like doing interval training.

And I’m not saying you have to do sprints on the treadmill, many of my clients are in no position to do fast paced running.

Your intervals can easily be done on a bike or an elliptical. Or you can do interval style training with battle ropes, medicine balls, slam balls, jumping, stairs, and the list goes on….

The biggest thing you need to remember when doing your intervals is to keep your ass moving, take your short rest then hop back into the work.

The whole idea of high intensity training is to run your body ragged, you’re supposed to be tired, exhausted, sweaty and out of breath.

Yes, you may be out of shape right now, but in a very short period of time your body will adjust and you will see the positive effects of high intensity training.

Just remember, even though you’re tired, it’s working. Trust me.

It may never FEEL like your intervals are getting any easier (and they may not be) but you are definitely improving and doing more reps or moving just a bit faster each time.


You’re Not Focusing On Strength Training

This is where SOOOOOOOOOO many people fall off or don’t even start. Strength training is the ONLY way you will EVER have the body you want.


If you’re not doing a strength training program of some sort and are expecting to see (and continue seeing) amazing results, then you need a reality check.

No diet, shake, pill, treadmill, walk, or sweet pair of new sneakers will build lean arms or a strong core.

And if they say they can, they’re lying.

You must LIFT something to BUILD ANYTHING.

Your strength training program needs to be the center of your world, the nucleus to your atom, the Alfred to your Batman.

If you don’t have a strength training program that fits YOUR needs and YOUR goals then everything else I have told you today is just stuff and is meaningless

So, you need to get on that ASAP OR you need to make the program you currently have your PRIMARY focus.



So pretty much to sum up this article, if you’re not seeing results then you’re just not well balanced enough in your training and your day to day routines.

Are these the ONLY reasons you’re not seeing results?
